2. At the bookstore
* SQL and Relational Theory: How to Write Accurate SQL Code
By C.J. Date
In this new book, available for pre-order, renowned author Chris Date explains how to apply relational theory directly to SQL. Examples demonstrate how to deal with common SQL dilemmas, including using views vs. base tables for database access, problems caused by nulls, the need for constraints vs. inadequate support for them, and more.
3. Informix update
* The IIUG returns to Kansas for its 2009 conference
IBM Lab in Lenexa is home to a significant percentage of Informix developers. That's reason enough to draw the IIUG conference back to Kansas in 2009, but IIUG president Stuart Litel throws in a few more for good measure.
* Improving IDS performance with row-type indexes
Indexes on Informix Dynamic Server row-type columns speed queries significantly, but aren't allowed with normal indexing mechanisms. IBM's Prasad Mujumdar explains how to get around the restriction and improve query performance.
