*DB2 "Viper" Open Beta

DB2 Viper is now available for beta testing by qualified IBM
customers, partners, and developers. Viper is the first "hybrid" DBMS,
meaning it offers both native XML data management and relational data
capabilities. With Viper, applications can use XQuery, standard SQL,
or both to retrieve documents from either or both underlying storage
formats. Another DB2 Viper highlight is support for all three common
methods of database partitioning (range partitioning, multidimensional
clustering, and hashing) at the same time. IBM will extend early Viper
support to the PHP development community using Zend Core for IBM.

* IBM Acquires iPhrase Systems, Inc.
Earlier this month, IBM acquired iPhrase Systems, Inc., a privately
held company that develops software that improves e-commerce sales,
online service and support, and call center productivity. Retailers
use iPhrase technology to help interpret and understand online
customer queries, even if they are misspelled or contain jargon.
iPhrase software also enables merchandisers to dynamically generate
customized Web pages with relevant products and shopping cart links,
based on individual customer needs. iPhrase is the fifteenth software
acquisition IBM has made since 2001 in support of its initiative to
deliver information as a service.  iPhrase's technology is compliant
with Unstructured Information Management Architecture, the emerging
standard developed by IBM Research that provides an open framework for
the composition of sophisticated analytic applications that discover
and leverage meaning from unstructured information.

* New IBM Software Captures Buzz
IBM introduced new software that delivers insight into brand
reputation and customer, competitor, and public opinion. The Public
Image Monitoring Solution, a software offering designed with Nstein
Technologies and Factiva, allows organizations to analyze and make
sense of commentary, issues, and information affecting their brands.
Companies can use the Public Image Monitoring Solution to track
success of product introductions and marketing campaigns, to help
determine focus areas for product and marketing improvements, and to
conduct impact analysis by comparing consumer feedback and industry

Image Monitoring Solution is based on IBM WebSphere Information
