1. FACE TIME WITH MARTIN HUBEL
Gold consultant Martin Hubel recently invited DB2 Magazine reader
questions about DB2 UDB for Linux, Unix, or Windows or DB2 UDB for
z/OS and OS/390, and readers were happy to oblige. In this edition of
Face Time, Martin, a frequent contributor to DB2 Magazine and editor
of IDUG Solutions Journal, answers your questions on buffer pool
allocation in DB2 for Linux, Unix, and Windows, compressing column
data, monitoring tempspace, and direct row access.

2. IBM NEWS
* DB2 Stinger Beta Opens
DB2 customers are getting a look at the real technology behind the
buzz as the next release of DB2 UDB for Linux, Unix, and Windows
(codenamed Stinger) enters its open beta period. Three earlier
technology previews gave the DB2 community a glimpse of selected
features, including productivity enhancements for .Net developers,
Linux scalability and cluster management, and Eclipse integration.
Beta testers will get a look at all 200 new features in Stinger, which
are designed to ease database administration, broaden support for
popular application development environments, and boost system
performance.

* DB2 UDB Takes Performance Triple Crown
DB2 UDB recently achieved the best price/performance result for TPC-C,
making IBM the only database vendor to ever simultaneously hold the
best result in all three of the most sought-after achievements in TPC
benchmarking: overall price/performance for TPC-C, best single system
(non-clustered)performance for TPC-C, and best overall performance at
the highest TPC-H scale factor (10 terabytes). TPC-C results
referenced are current as of Feb. 17, 2004. Please see www.tpc.org for
current TPC-C results.

3. DB2 MAGAZINE TRIVIA CONTEST
* In Six Security Secrets Attackers Don't Want You to Know? (DB2
Magazine Quarter 2, 2004), what does author Aaron C. Newman say is one
of the easiest holes for hackers to exploit? If you know, you can
enter a drawing for a $100 American Express Gift Cheque. (You?ll also
be better able to protect your data, of course.)

* Free DB2 UDB Professional Certification Tutorials
If you?re planning to take advantage of the free certification offered
at the 2004 DB2 Information Management Technical Conference in Las
Vegas this fall, you might want to check out IBM?s free self-study
tutorials. IBM offers four role-specific tutorials that let you
prepare for DB2 Professional Certification at your own pace: Family
Fundamentals for DB2 v.8 (exam 700), Database Administration for
Linux, UNIX and Windows v.8 (exam 701), DB2 UDB V8.1 Family
Application Development (exam 703), and DB2 UDB V7 User Certifcation
(exam 512).

* Discounts for On-Site Training
The traditionally slow summer months can be an ideal time for employee
training ? particularly when they coincide with a discount offer from
IBM. For a limited time, IBM will waive instructor travel and living
expenses when a company books two or more on-site classes. To take
advantage of the offer, book the training before June 30; you can
schedule the classes between May 1 and August 31, 2004.
